In India, something intriguing lies around every corner. This alcove was set into a wall with a small wooden door, pink, worn, carved and cracked. What was it for? What did it represent? In the roughly textured whitewashed wall, a hole was filled with a broken stone. Beaches on New Zealand's west coast are famous for grey sand and, in the winter, rough, stormy weather. I really wanted to capture the strong contrast between the intense slash of light in the alley surrounded by the large area of shadow. Each autumn produces wonderful rich colors in leaves and fruit. Here the browns, oranges and purples of pomegranates contrast with the brighter pinks and yellows of the seeds as one of the pomegranates bursts open. Every day as I walked to work, I would see a few beautiful purple poppies in a wasteland of weeds behind some factory buildings—a quiet place people never went. Except for this one. A wonderful dusting of morning frost covered the last remaining roses of the year. I was struck by wonderful colors in this scene during my visit to Rajasthan in 2004—the florescent pink of her clothes and the reflections in the metal bowl on her head against a textured desert background. Working from a sketch, reference photos and memories from my time there, I used a subdued palette and focused on the reds, silvers and dark green of her blouse against the silver greys of the background. One day in the Pacific Island of Samoa, I walked out across a reef, peering down into cracks between the rocks into the depths. As the waves broke over the reef the water flooded in and out of the crevices and the brilliant blues and greens became deeper and more mysterious. To capture the liquid colors of water as they flowed around the rocks, I glued paper and cardboard to the paper, added texture paste then poured liquid paint and let it run, mix and flow across the surface of the painting.
